Specialisation in the Republic of Slovenia

Conducting specialisation in the Republic of Slovenia

A foreign national can conduct specialisation in the Republic of Slovenia in accordance with the procedure and conditions, determined by the General Practitioners Services Act (PDF; size: 335 kB) in the Rules on the types and curriculum of specialization of doctors in compliance with the programme, valid for the nationals of the Republic of Slovenia.

The medical Chamber of Slovenia opens a public invitation for tender at least once a year, with possible application for specific specialist fields and specific geographical regions.

Tender application (hereinafter: application) must include the original or a certified copy of the following:

  1. evidence on completed studies at a medical faculty in Slovenia or evidence on the official recognition of a foreign medical university degree or a decision on equivalence of foreign title with the Slovenian professional title of doctor of medicine or doctor of dental medicine (only for specialisation in maxillofacial surgery) obtained within the procedure of recognition under the act, regulating the recognition and evaluation of education; *(official recognition is not necessary for doctors and dentists who completed their studies within the former Yugoslav republics before 25 June 1991),

  2. evidence on having completed the professional examination in the Republic of Slovenia (completed by the application closing date); or evidence of completing two thirds of internship in Republic of Slovenia*
    * Candidates from Member Countries of the European Union can replace the evidence required in point 1 and 2 above by submitting evidence on qualification recognition to practice a profession within the Republic of Slovenia, obtained within the procedure of qualification recognition under a special act,

  3. a statement that, following specialisation, the candidate will accept as his first employment as a specialist an offer from the public health service authority in the region for which he is standing as a candidate, and this for at least a period equivalent to the duration of the specialisation; should he decline the offer from the region, he shall be obliged to work within public health service for a single period equivalent to the duration of the specialisation.

  4. Certificate of Medical Fitness to practise as a specialist, issued from one of the Occupational specialists, listed in the Tender

  5. A curriculum vitae

  6. A prove of the paid tax 17,73€

Professional exam organized by Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia, Štefanova 5, Ljubljana.

A doctor must be recorded in the medical register – membership in the Medical Chamber of Slovenia.

Should a foreign national wish to conduct specialisation for needs outside the public health network, he must enclose with the application the funding provider's statement on coverage of specialisation fees, but he does not need to comply with the requirement stated in point 3 (a statement that, following specialisation, the candidate will accept employment in a certain region). Before entering specialization, the candidate and the funding provider shall enter into a contract with the Medical Chamber of Slovenia to settle their liabilities to one another as regards specialisation. The Medical Chamber of Slovenia shall charge 90 points of medical tariff monthly for managing specialisation for the duration of the specialisation.
