Conditions governing the exercise of medical professions in the Republic of Slovenia

For a while now foreign nationals have been able to work in the Slovenian health care. To do that, they must first obtain a licence from the Medical Chamber of Slovenia to let them work independently and a work permit from the Employment Service of Slovenia (which is settled by the employer).

For a doctor / dentist to be an independent medical services practitioner it is compulsory to comply with the terms provided by the labour law and other regulations, as well as specific requirements provided by the General Practitioners Services Act.

A doctor / dentist is required to:

  • have adequate professional qualifications and training
    A doctor / dentist is qualified for independent practice if he/she has a degree from the Medical faculty of Ljubljana university or an evidence on the official recognition of a foreign university degree, and have also completed:
    • Dentist: internship,
    • Specialist doctor: medical specialisation,
    • Dental specialist: dental specialisation,
  • be fully registered with the Medical Chamber of Slovenia
    Apply for registration – membership in the Medical Chamber of Slovenia.

A doctor is required to use the Slovenian language while practicing medical services and if working in a mixed bilingual area of Italian or Hungarian national minority, he /she also has to use the Italian or Hungarian language.
Language knowledge is proven by a secondary school certificate or an educational institution certificate.
